Ministry Apprenticeship Team

Junior or senior high students have the opportunity to be involved in an exciting summer ministry at Trout Lake Camps. Through the Ministry Apprenticeship Program (MAT) students have the opportunity to change the lives of both young and old. Students also grow in their understanding of ministry and in their ability to reach out to those around them in relationships, family, school, church and community.

Senior High

Senior high (completed 9th grade) students can participate as either part-time or full-time staff members. Students who are involved part-time work alongside college-age summer staff members in a specific area. They may be assigned to the beach, boating area, recreation area, craft shack, office, food services, or maintenance department. They also serve as student counselors under the supervision of a college-age counselor. In each area, students will learn the "ins and outs" of camp ministry. Part-time students do something new every week. These are volunteer positions for part of the summer.

Those involved full-time must be available from June 11th until August 26th (although some exception may be possible on a limited basis). Full-time students have increased responsibility. They are required to attend staff training from June 11-14, participate in ministry partnership, and are paid $100.00 per week. In essence, full-time MAT students are full-time summer staff, but also benefit from the additional leadership of the MAT program. This is the only way in which individuals under 18 years of age can serve as full-time staff.

MAT members are part of the entire camp community. This means they eat, sleep, and laugh with other students like themselves. Students also pray together, discuss ministry-related issues and hold each other accountable to live a life of spiritual integrity. Students often develop some of their strongest friendships while at Trout Lake Camps because of the intense nature of the time spent together.

Junior High

Junior high (completed 7th grade) students may apply for up to two weeks during the month of August. Junior High MAT members play an important role in family ministry at Trout Lake Camps. They provide childcare services during family camps and are also involved in work projects during the week. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Baby-sitting for a camp family three hours each evening and for three hours at least one afternoon during the week.
  • Assisting at the beach, recreation shack, or boat docks in the afternoon.
  • Assisting with a certain age group or on special work projects each morning.
